There have been rumors buzzing through social media these past few days about Zendaya Coleman being offered the role of Ariel in the live action Little Mermaid. News of the Greatest Showman star playing one of Disney's most famous princesses has excited many of Coleman's devoted fans, including us here at The Bookish Spot. Whether or not this rumor is true, there are a great deal of reasons why Zendaya would be perfect for this role, and we'd love to share them with you!
1. Her Voice
Anyone who's seen Zendaya in anything knows she has a gorgeous singing voice. She has natural talent that wouldn't need to be fixed up with auto tune, and she can hit enough high notes for Part Of Your World to sound perfectly magical. Prince Eric will certainly be mesmerized by her.
2. Amazing Dancing Skills
Zendaya began her career as a back up dancer, before landing the role of dancer Rocky Blue on Disney Channel's Shake It Up. She displayed her dancing skills incredibly well both in Shake it Up, and her most recent film The Greatest Showman. Ariel may have a tail for half the film, but if Disney plans to include songs from the Little Mermaid Broadway Musical, Zendaya's dance skills will certainly come in handy for One Step Closer (watch below).
3. Conveys Emotion and Humor Equally Well
Ariel as a character is both emotional and comical, and Disney needs an actress who can play emotionally diverse roles in order for her character to feel genuine. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Zendaya played a dry humored MJ who mostly appeared for comic relief. Yet in The Greatest Showman, she had a very emotionally complex role, and played it off incredibly well. The scene in the hospital where she sings the Rewrite The Stars Reprise is so moving- I was in tears within 30 seconds. Zendaya is fantastic at exuding both tears and laughter, a crucial element in making a film about a 16 year old in love.
4. Experience in Musical Movies
Filming musical movies is much different from regular film or performing live. Many actors who have participated in a musical film have commented on the complexity of it all. This being said, Disney would do well to cast actors who are experienced in this area. Zendaya's role in The Greatest Showman would be of great benefit to her, as she'd be familiar with how the movie would be filmed and recorded.
5. Pulls Off Red Hair Really Well
Ariel's red hair is one of the most iconic things about her character. And as we can clearly see from the mock up poster above, Zendaya pulls off red hair really well. Not that Ariel has to have red hair, but it's good to know the actress in question can pull of the style should Disney decide to stick with her original hair colour.
6. Solid Relationship With Disney
Though this isn't a requirement, its in Zendaya's favor that she's worked with Disney before. They're familiar with her work ethic and the amount of dedication she puts into a job. They know her contract, and having a former Disney Channel star play one of their most famous characters is only a plus. She's appeared in about 8 Disney films, and come next July a 9th, as she'll be reprising her role as MJ in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Disney clearly wants to hold onto this talented girl, and for good reason!
Whatever decision Disney makes about who will be reprising the role of Ariel, we can all agree that Zendaya is a solid choice for the role. Let's hope these rumors turn out to be true!
